This continues the Foundational Thinking miniseries with an introduction of the Institute of Public Works Engineering Australasia’s (IPWEA) International Infrastructure Maintenance Manual (IIMM) first published in 1995. Subsequent editions were published in 2002, 2006, 2009, 2012, and 2015. There was also an IIMM supplement published in 2020 that clarifies alignment between the IIMM and ISO 55001 – Asset Management System Requirements.
Successive additions have built on previous additions making use of feedback, developing best practices, and incorporating emerging trends and technologies. The first edition published the following principles for infrastructure maintenance management:
Maintenance should be planned,
Maintenance should be systematic,
Maintenance should be targeted,
Maintenance should be cost-effective, and
Maintenance should be monitored.
